otor truckers, who havesurvived through the lean months that have followedthe war fever and steam railroad embargoes, realizethat they cannot compete in rates with the frequent-service trolley for such runs as Boston-Worcester, 44miles, and Worcester-Springfield, 55 miles. Nor istheir advantage in speed of any importance againstthe over-night delivery mentioned. On the other hana,the steam railroads are still most uncertain in theirhandling of less-than-carload freight. Hence a ship-per who is willing to pay extra for speed will engagea motor trucker. The latter makes a flat over-all rate,including that portion of the trip via trolley. The ratecharged to the customer is approximately first class orexpress, but that which the truckman pays over theelectric railway part of the run may be third or fourthclass or some extremely low commodity rate. Thusthe motor-truck operator is sure of a slear profit for Roof - cover with 5-plyfelt and gravel Wheel guardsof iron poles filledwith concrete

Asidefrom this, he has to meet the competition of furnituremovers and others who take a good load one way andin their eagerness to return with a load underbidthe concern which is trying to conduct a regularcommon carrier business. On the whole, therefore, theelectric railways in this combination have no fearat all of the motor truck.
