f the lymphatic system. It is about 18 or20 inches long, and about the diameter of a moderatesized goose-quill. Commencing in the abdomen, some-where opposite the second lumbar vertebra, it passesthrough the diaphragm by the aortic opening, ascendingnear the vertebral column to the neck; it then curvesdownward, and joins the subclavian vein at the angleformed by its junction with the jugular vein. Itsstructure is very similar to that of the veins, and it isnumerously supplied with valves (see fig. 59). The rightlymphatic duct is small and unimportant; it containsno chyle. 273.
