STANTON, Elizabeth (Cady), an Americanreformer and advocate of female suffrage, born inJohnstown, N. Y., November 12th, 1815; died inNew York City, October 25th, 1902. A daugh-ter of Judge Daniel Cady, she was educated atJohnstown Academy and at Mrs. Willards sem-inary in Troy, N. Y., graduating in 1832. In1840 she married Henry B. Stanton. Her studyof Blackstone, Story, and other legal writers firstdrew her attention to the subject of woman suf-frage. With Lucretia Mott, whose acquaintanceshe had made at the Anti-Slavery Convention inLondon, 1840, she signed the call for the first wom-ans rights convention, which met in SenecaFalls, N. Y., in 1848. She circulated petitions forthe Married Womans Property Bill, and addresseda legislative committee on the subject in 1844.She has lectured throughout the United States,and frequently addressed Congressional commit-tees and State Conventions. She was Presidentof the Womans Rights Committee (1855-65), ofthe Womans Loyal League in 1863, and o
