LAURENCE MONTGOMERY From the Anatomical Laboratory of theUniversity of California Some recent work by Meltzer (1920) on the ablation of thesuperior cervical sympathetic ganglia indicates that certaincommon laboratory animals do not survive the removal of thesebodies. This careful investigator found in a large series ofanimals that approximately 90 per cent of his experimental ani-mals succumbed in from one to ten days to this operative pro-cedure, exhibiting on death pulmonary lesions. It was sug-gested by this worker that these results may have been due toan endocrine function exercised by these ganglia. These results, whatever may have been the cause of death,are at variance with somewhat similar M^ork of other investi-gators. E. Sharpey Shafer (1919) demonstrated before theEnglish Physiological Society two rabbits, each of which hadhad its superior cervical sympathetic ganglia
