Ralph paid no more attention to the chief en-gineer but continued vigorously to fill his buckets, the chief engineer watching him. When all thebuckets were filled Commander Harker pattedhim kindly on the back saying, You are doingwell, my boy; you have a strong arm and donttire. Id like to have you permanently in mydepartment; youll make a good fireman in time.If you would like to have your rate changed fromordinary seaman to coal passer let me know laterand ril ask the captain to do it. Ralph gazed at Commander Harker with aston-ishment. * Can this be that violent old man whohas so shamefully treated me? was the unex-pressed thought in his mind. In the chief engi-neers eyes there was a kindly interest Ralph hadnever seen there before ; he was amazed to learnthere was a side to the old mans character he couldnot have imagined existed.
