English: Photograph of a six-story building with figures along the top. There is a horse and wagon in front of a neighboring building.
Typed note attached to photo: "IN DAYS GONE BY -- The Equitable Life Assurance Society was known for many years as owner and occupant of the old Equitable Building (above), which stood at 6th and Locust until it was demolished in 1955. This is how the building looked in 1878, before the structure was raised 22 feet by jacks and additional floors were inserted at street level. The building, known as St. Louis' first skyscraper, boasted the city's first hydraulic elevators. Jay Gould, the so-called 'Wizard of Wall Street', once had his St. Louis office in the structure." Also called St. Louis Life Insurance Building and Mutual Life Insurance Building. Photograph is a copy of an earlier photo/print.Title: Equitable Building, northwest corner of Sixth and Locust Streets. |
