Estrecha y de edificios que van poco á poco renovándosey tomando modernas apariencias,—guiaba á la puerta que, con elnombre de la calle, daba fuera del recinto amurallado de lapiLebla nueva^ salida al Convento del seráfico instituidor del si- (i) Aunque la tradición señala á Luís Quixada, muerto en i 570, como funda-dor de esta iglesia, la fábrica del Colegio tuvo comienzo en i 603 y la de la iglesiaen 1607, según demuestra Assas ;^Sem¿i«ar/o Pm/. SANTANDER.—Interior de la Iglesia de la Compañía 37^ S A N T A N L) E K glo XIII; y allí, con efecto, derribadas puertas y murallas, confisonomía extravagante, pero labrado en piedra y convertido enparroquial, se alza al extremo de la calle, y dando frente á lahermosa Plaza de Becedo^ el templo de San Francisco. Avanza el pórtico sobre el perímetro de la iglesia, y despo-jado de las estatuas que decoraron sus ornacinas, ostenta en suprincipal fachada el escudo franciscano, por bajo del cual apare-cen las dos siguientes quintillas, que si no son modelo con ver-dad bajo el aspecto literario, al menos no lo son tampoco bajoel de la humildad y la modestia: Este divino Tusóny sacrosantas señales,entienda el mundo que sonarmas desta religiónaunque son armas reales.
