orth Americaby the Spaniards, began to make explorations in the valley of theSt. Lawrence. In 1608 Champlain founded Quebec, and fromthat time French priests, trappers, and adventurers pushedtheir way westward until they had reached the farthest bordersof the Great Lakes. Marquette and Joliet found the Missis-sippi. La Salle explored it to the Gulf of Mexico and tookpossession of Louisiana. The French then sent colonists to the mouth of the Mississippi, and built various forts and settle-ments between it and Quebec. Thus it came about that two nations were established inNorth America, both claiming the same territory. They wereunlike in many respects, but especially in their treatment of theIndians. The French understood the red man and won thefriendship of most of the tribes east of the Mississippi. TheEnglish disliked the Indians, and the Indians hated the Eng-lish, because the white men had taken from them so much oftheir land. Only the Iroquois withstood the advances of the French,

Early French and Indian Wars. — That a clash betweenthe two nations must come sooner or later was to be expected.France and England had been foes for centuries, and a warbetween them was always imminent. American colonieswould naturally hold the same views as the mother country,so that when war broke out in Europe, it was taken up by theFrench and British colonies. The first conflict began in 1690,and was caused by European complications. It is usuallynamed in history as King Williams War.
