al, legal, political, and social studies, in phi-losophy, in philology, in the critical study of literatureand art, in every branch of investigation, the activity was Science. unremitting, the cumulative result revolutionary and stu-pendous. Not only were the confines of knowledge greatlywidened, but the methods of its acquisition and disseminationwere multiplied and perfected. The work was internationalin character, the product of many minds, of many labora-tories. That the well-being of men was vastly furtheredby it all is most obvious. It would be impossible, for in-stance, to exaggerate the relief from fearful suffering, thegain to human life, brought about by the two discoveriesof anesthetics and antiseptics, products of the scientificinvestigations of the century. In two respects, which havea closer connection with the general character of this volume,it is desirable to show how science has revolutionized the ^ H. T.
