e figure ismoulded and inlaid in three shades of amber; the cauldron,smoke, frogs, and bats are treated in a similar manner; andthe moon, in silver, gives a suggestion of night. Surroundingthis panel is an elaborate border of deadly night-shade,flowers, and leaves, as representing poison, all of whichare inlaid in appropriate colours. The reverse side has a sunk oval panel, in which isdepicted the Amber Witch riding on a broom, soaringabove the moon, which can be seen in the lower part of theoval, and a bat flying across it, together with three goldenstars give the suggestion of night. The figure is also mouldedand inlaid in the same way as the front cover, and the outerborder is similar to that of the front side, but, in addition,two black ravens are introduced. The doublures (see illustration No. 15) are of whitemorocco, each having an oval of dark blue, on which areinlaid the figures of a horned devil in scarlet with blackwings; the one on the front doublure appearing in an upright
