It is quite likely that the fashion, like so many other luxurious fashions,of decorating fans with artistic paintings, had its origin in the luxurious courtof the Louis. Certain it is, however, that the fashion was and always has beenmost common and carried to its greatest extreme in France. Some of theseare miracles of delicate workmanship and marvels of painting.
