Between them are suspendedgarlands, so disposed as to form frames for the medallion portraits that enrichthe sides of the vase. We have on this page, also, examples of ornamentaltiles suitable for walls, floors and chimneys; and in one corner is a single tile, 388 THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION, 1876. painted by hand, suitable for any decorative purpose. The design is a simpleone—a palm branch with a pair of parrakeets perched on one of the shoots; but it is so deli-cately paintedand colored, andevinces such anartistic feelingf intreatment thatthe tile mightworthily beframed and hungin a room as awall-ornament.Below this tileare two plaques,decorated withflower designsafter nature andscroll-work geo-metrically dis-posed, both ofwhich illustratethe high class oftalent employedby this firm. The Iron Grate,on page 383, wasexhibited in theextensive displaymade by Steel& Garland, ofSheffield, Eng-land. The prin-cipal feature ofthe work, asidefrom the generaldesign, is the decoration of the panels.
