Certainly our present interest is in its beautiful surroundings.The grace and artistic merit of the design gilded on the panels of the siderails; the happy way in which the leaf and flower ornamentation of the cornerpanels is treated; the harmony of all the minor details to the severe simplicityof the whole—all of these are deserving of praise, and should gain for theworkmen and the artist places in the first rank with their comrades. The ideaof using the surface of the upper part of the mirror as a ground on whichto paint a picture is peculiarly charming—more especially for such a one asthis. Obviously, in such a position and on such a surface but one idea canbe conveyed suitably; that is, floating in the ain And this the artist hasdone most successfully.
