H EYE-PEP PER—EXPLORATION OF A MUNSEE CEMETERY 63 undecorated cooking vessels (pi. xx, a). The body is covered withtextile or cord-wrapped paddle-marks, the neck has a series ofwheel-marks applied horizontally, and the lip is ornamented withan impressed line evidently applied with a similar tool. Height6 in.; diameter a\ in. Another typical jar of Algonquian manufacture is shown inplate xxi. It has tapering sides and is rounded below. A portionof one side and part of the rim are missing. The body surfaceis covered with deeply malleated paddle-marks, which also originallycovered the neck, but the latter area has been smoothed, therebypractically obliterating the ornamentation. The rim is narrow andhas a deeply cut, cross-hatched design evidently made with a sharpscarifying tool. The lip of the jar is plain. Height 8J in.; diam-eter 7J in.
