paper isfastened whenever you have curved lines to cut, being carefulto place your left hand flat on the paper about one-eighth orone-quarter inch away from the knife point. Your knife mustbe kept perfectly sharp by frequent strokes on your oil stone.In this manner you will soon be able to cut without requiringmuch trimming, which is done by using sharp nail scissorsfor curved lines—also flat scissors—wherever corners are notcut clean, or if small shreds are left hanging. You can thentake a piece of rag or sponge and wipe over both surfacesof the paper with linseed oil, allowing it to soak into thepaper 10 minutes and then wiping off the surplus oil clean,with a dry rag. Another method is to sprinkle paraffine shav-ings over one side of the stencil, ironing it with a warm sad-iron, and then do the other sides. To make the stencil stillmore durable use shellac or varnish on the edges of bothsides where the design is cut out, also on the inner edges. 48 FAIRCHILDS RAPID LETTERER 49
