HAWKS THAT ARE THE FRIENDS OF MANLarge, conspicuous hawks are all of great economic value, being the principal natural check on the hordes ofnoxious rodents that, if unmolested, would soon render agriculture unprofitable. The large soaring, circlinghawks of the open country are not the ones that molest the farmers poultry, but are the ones that hold incheck the field-niice, gophers, ground-squirrels, mole-crickets and grasshoppers that annually cost the countrymany millions of dollars through their depredations on crops, orchards and forage. ONLY FOUR MEMBERS OF THE HAWK FAMILY ARE OUR ENEMIESThe four liawks whose names are underscored are the ones that give a bad name to the whole hawk family.Of these the Coopers Hawk is most important because commonest and most widely distributed. The Gos-hawk, restricted to the Northern wooded region, is terribly destructive to game birds and to poultry. TheSharp-shin, an inveterate bird-killer, is too small to molest poultry, except chicks a few days old. ThePigeon Hawk is not important, being quite rare.
