ephistopheleshas carried Faust to a Kermesse in the market-placeof a country town. Valentine now goes off to thewars, distressed at leaving, alone and young, hissister Margaret. His friend Siebel, a boyish admirer,promises to guard her like a brother. Valentineleaves her, however, to the care of Dame Martha, akindly, but vulgar, commonplace woman, who provesa by no means vigilant person. Faust now pleadswith Mephistopheles to see Margaret, *Hhat darlingchild whom I saw in a dream. Mephistophelesagrees to his request; and so, during a break in thedances, Faust is enabled to salute Margaret for thefirst time as she returns from church. He offers herhis escort, which she declines; whereupon Mephis-topheles observes that he must teach Faust how towoo, and the dance is resumed. Act 3.—This Act takes place in Margarets garden. Siebel has left a floral offering for Margaret. Faust and Mephistopheles enter secretly and place ** som^ thino- a little rarer, to adorn a too willing wearer, ^ 32

For ever! Act III. Sc. 1 THE LIBRETTO namely, a casket of jewels, on the doorstep. Thebeauty of the jewels overcomes her womans weak-ness. As Mephistopheles says, If yonder flowersthis casket do outshine, never will I trust a womanmore. Never in her sleep did Margaret dream ofanything so lovely. She cannot resist putting onthe jewels. Faust and Mephistopheles find heradorned with them, and while Mephistopheles keepsMartha, the convenient neighbour in whose houseMargaret is often found, out of the way, Faustpassionately pleads his love with Margaret. The Actends by Margaret yielding to Fausts prayers andentreaties, as the euphemism is. In plain terms,Margaret has lost her virtue. Act 4.—We now see Margaret left alone, discon-solate, shunned by her friends, haunted by remorse.Faust has thrown her aside. He has, however, toreckon with Valentine, who returns from his mili-tary service to learn, from the scandal of the town,of his sisters love affair. His sister has been hispride, and he
