n rise to the belief thattliere are several distinct species of this fish, l)ut it would appear to bedoubtful whether there are more than at most t^^•o Hcientifically dis-tinguishable species. The local peculiarities in the markings, therefore,which are to be observed in the fish of certain lakes may perhaps beattributed to the characteristics of the particular waters. The lake trout is to be found throughout the great lakes and inmost of the larger and many of the smaller inland lakes of the Province.It is a highly predaceous and voracious fish, and will devour almost any-thing, its principal food consisting of herrings, young whitefish andother soft-finned fishes. In the general it frequents the deeper Avaters,but is to be captured in waters of almost any depth, being taken usuallynear the bottom. The spawning season varies greatly according to thelocality, commencing in the northern waters early in October and inmore southerly regions not until November. The close season for this

Whatever may be the merits of the contention, asapplied to the commercial fisheries of the great lakes, that the fish is ofsuch a hardy and rapacious nature that it is well able to look afteritself even under such conditions, this would obviously not apply in thecase of smaller bodies of water where the numbers of the fish are com-paratively few, and in consequence, in those lesser lakes in which thelake trout affords sport to residents or visitors some measures shouldat once be taken to protect the fish at the local time of spawning againstboth netting and angling. The fish spawns in water from 10 to 100 feetdeep, the eggs being deposited on the reefs of honeycombed and similarrocks. The flesh of the lake trout is highly esteemed
