| Description |
English: (1 in a multiple picture set) The Lewis River flows at the far south end of Yellowstone National Park. It was named for Captain Merriweather Lewis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Clark and the main band were pushing their way west north of this location. He dispatched Lewis and a small group to explore the land above them. It is interesting that this scouting group wrote nothing about the geothermal activity very close by this spot. They must not have seen the geyser basins. A member of their group, John Coulter, returned to this area after the expedition was finished and he found the geysers. For some time they were called 'Coulter's Hell'. |
