Photographs of five pages (leaves 22-24) from the 1807 register at Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, Monterey (Carmel), photo ca.1900.
  • The document is signed by Padre Presidente, Estaban Tapis, dated May 1807, at San Carlos Mission, Monterey. It includes a transcription of a letter from Gasol in October 1806 to the heads of the religious schools and missions of Monterey, San Diego, and Santa Barbara in which he sets out the statutes for the operation of the schools and missions.
  • It is entitled "Copia de Patente del R.P. Gn. Gasol de Primero de Octubre de 1806."
  • Leaf 22 recto, paragraph 1: "Fr. Jose Gasol de la Rey Obrero a de N.P.S. FraA+-co, Predo Apco, ex-Lector de saga a teologia, Pe de la Prova del Sr.Evangelio de Mexico, y Guardian del Colegio de San Fernando de la misma cuidad: Al R.P. Presidente y demas religiosos del expresado Colegio, epistentes en las misiones de Monterey, San Diego, Sra. Barbara y demas fundadas y que en lo sucesivo se fundasen al cargo y direccion de dho Colegio en la Nueva California, salud en Nuestro Senor Christo, que es la verdadera salud." -- transcription.
Leaf 22 recto, par.2: "Ha llegado al fin la hora, que tan vivan e deseaba, R.R.P.P. y hermanos cansisimos de Jesu Christo, de que abra a V.V.R.R. mi pecho, y les manifieste los sentimientos de celo, y vigilancia de que se halla penetrado mi corazon, no solo sobre los hijos de nuestro amado Colegio, que viven dentro de sus claustros; sino tambien de los que fuera de el ejercen las funciones de nuestro Aposto ministerio. A unos y a otros igualmente se debe estenden mi pastoral solicitud, y V.V.R.R. mismos, si por hallarse tan distantes de su Colegio, se viesen privados de las eportanciones, consejos, y correciones conducense a su espix-consuelo, podian con razon quejarse de mi negligencia." -- transcription.
Leaf 22 recto, par.3: "A fin pues, de que no tengan el menor motivo de queja, ni de culparme en la presencia del seA+-or de omiso en hablar, avisar, y corregir lo que era digno de aviso y correcion, he resuelto (con anuencia del Ve Discretorio) dirigir a V.V.R.R. estas letras patente, con el objecto de establecer algunos puntos, que todos deberan observar, para que por medio de esta religion uniformidad se conserve entre V.V.R.R. la paz que tanto procuran los Fundadores de alguno de sus Ministros, no solo a mi y a mis antecesores, sino tambien al Virreynato de esta capital." -- transcription.
