Trees, shrubs, or anmml or perennial, visually rough-hairy herbs, with mucilaginous juice, alternate or rarelyojpjposite, undivided leaves, symmetrical flowers, with a five- 530 BORRAGINE^. (BORAGE FAMILY.) cleft or -jparted calyx (in Cordia sometimes irregularly 3-8-toothed), a regidarly ^-lohed corolla (in Echium^ JEchiochilooi,and some AnchuscB irregularly o-lohed, and in Cordia 6-8-jparted)^ stamens tcsually 5, nserted on the corolla^ alternat-ing with its loles^ and a single style — Stamens rarely 4sterile and 1 fertile. Pistil composed of one, 1-celled, two,2-celled, or four, 1-celled ovaries, each 1-seeded. Style ter-minal or basilar, arising from middle of cells. Fiuit agreen drupe, or twin, 2-celled pyrenes, or quadruple, 1-cellednutlets. Seeds with or without albumen. Inflorescenceusually in a scorpioid cyme or raceme. Fig. 351.
