Description

Type of Calochortus Flower.
(Mariposa or Butterfly Tulips.)
A remarkably brilliant class of California bulbs with flowers in
The richest combinations ; for winter blooming in the house, they
gi^e great pleasure. Four or six bulbs are recommended for use in
a five inch pot or bos. They are very easily grown, cared for in
the same manner as Hyacinths in pots. When in bloom they are
very showy and last a long time.
The exquisitely moulded flowers resemble in form the Tulip,
while the colors Are vivid and intense, blotched and marked like
the butterfly's wing in crimson, cream, white, i
yellow, buff," violet, rose, lemon, brown, salmon
and pink.
They can also be planted outside in the fall.
Cover slightly with Utter, and they bloom beau-
tifully in early spring.
New Calochortus Vesta.
This very clearly marked strain is not related
to any of the others. I consider it the finest of all
Calochorti. The immense flowers, three to five
inches across, are borne on long stocks and are
numerous. Petals, broad, fan-shaped, with hairv
gland across base, and a broad eye and band across
middle. Color white, suffused 'with lilac to rose
purple. Center red. Back of petal purple. It grows
m any soil, from heavy wet clay to light loam, and is
not subject to disease.

Japanese Hanging Fern Balls.
These fern balls are going to be quite the rage the
coming season. The fern fronds are woven together
like rattan into a ball some 6 to 8 inches through.
They come from Japan in a dry dormant state.
When ready to start them, dip them in tepid water
for 4 or 6 hours, then hang them in a rather warm
place, and water them by dipping each day for a
week or so. Then see that they have enough water
by sprinkling. Soon the young .ea^ es Mill begin to
start, and continue until the bail is completely
enveloped with most beautiful foliage. They are a
beautiful and unique ornament., showing the skill
of the Japanese in connection with the beautiful
plant growth. They are suspended from the ceiling
like hanging baskets and give a fairy-like effect.
For piazza in summer they are very beautiful sus-
pended from the roof with fine wire.
Pri-e of frashly imported Fern Balls, largest size,
75c. each ; prepaid by express or mail.

Public domain

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
