somebody call him eber so many times, and Ihunted, too, and touldnt find him. Do you knowwhere he libs, Mr. Dumas ? Wasnt it a bird you heard ? laughed Mr.Dumas.^ You J^now little birds tant talk ! Some of them can, if they are taught. And someof the notes which untaught birds utter, sounddistinctly like words in our language. There is abird that says Whip-poor-will as plain as anything,so that is what they named the bird. There is abird that says Bob White, and that bird is a quail.You can see them almost any time in grain-fields,for there, right upon the ground, is where they buildtheir nests and fill them full of eggs — a dozen ormore. But if any one comes near, they fly up, andflutter around just as if they were disabled, andmake you believe you could easily catch them; but,trying, you find it is not quite so easy as you thought,for they are only drawing you away from their nests,and as soon as they have accomplished theirdesigns, you find out they were not lame at all, only 276

Bob White. BOB WHITE. making believe. As it comes near hatching time,they sit so constantly as to be scarce aware ofdanger though ever so threatening. I once knew apoor quail who would not leave her hatching brooduntil a reaping-machine actually cut off her legsand, with a cry of distress, away she flew withoutany legs. Whatever became of her no body everknew; but the next day, a little girl, not muchlarger than Rose here, found a dozen cold eggs anda pair of quails legs. The little thing carried themhome and tried to blow them so that she couldstring them on a string, but not one of them wouldblow, because every one of them had a poor, dearlittle dead quail in it, just ready to hatch. Rose gave a sigh of sympathy and laid her cheekdown in Mr. Dumas coat-collar. All little quails, however, dont come to such asad end, for I often see papa and mamma quails stalk-ing about grain-fields, followed by great families oflittle ones.
