Barbet de Jouy, on the date, 1790, which appears Theon the base of this example.1 Its authenticity as the third and last pjjtfjj^.version of Houdons famous Diana is now established beyond jean- disPute- HoudonAnother matter which has also long been in question—the date and at which Houdon executed his busts of Voltaire—has been settled Claudeby his later biographers.2 It is at present an accepted fact that cioSon *they were produced during Voltaires last visit to Paris. In April,1778, the writer of the Me moires Secrets mentions Houdonsbust of Moliere,3 and adds, il vient dexposer Voltaire. 4 Touch-ing details of the last sitting given at this date—a few weeks beforehis death—by Voltaire to Houdon, then engaged on the fineseated statue for the Francais, are preserved in the report of aspeech by a certain M. Villevielle (probably the marquis de Ville-vielle of the letters5) on the 5th January, 1803, a
