In order to complete the work left in his hands by Bouchardon,Pigalle had to put on one side the tomb of Marshal Saxe, themodel5 for which he had exhibited at the Salon of 1756. Monmartel —for whom he had executed Lenfant a Jean-la cage— un monument temoignage de la douleur de la famille,1 p^iie*6speaks as if his work on Bouchardons Louis XV. was still in pro-gress, and concludes with on sait quil est auteur du mausolee deM. le Conte de Saxe.2 A marble bust of Maurice de Saxe, now in the Louvre, figuresin the list of Lenoirs Musee des Monumens Francais.3 It appearsto have been carried out from life, and therefore at some time priorto 1750 : it is, however, possible that Pigalle only executed it tomake sure of the likeness before completing the work ordered bythe king in 1753,4 that mausoleum of which Bachaumont says,that it is sans contredit, un des plus beaux morceaux de geniequon puisse voir en fait de sculpture.
