For a consider-able distance they had been able to use the snowshoes theyhad brought with them ; for the surface of the ice, except inthe outer zone, was particularly even and covered with drysnow, the temperature (for they travelled at night, and sleptby day) being for the most part under freezing-point. Onthe return journey they tied the sledges together and riggedup the tarpaulin as a sail, and in this fashion, during thefirst three days and nights, they sailed at a spanking rateabout forty-five geographical miles. 139 GHAPTEE IX THE GEEAT ICE AGE When the Scandinavian peasant is working his land liefinds, too often, alas! that it is full of stones. Greatboulders are strewn over his fields, generally of such sizethat it does not pay to remove them, so that the plough hassimply to pass them by. Here and there blocks occur aslarge as a good-sized house. If the peasant has an eye forvarieties of rock, he will most likely observe that these■boulders are of quite another kind of stone from that of theneighbouring mountains ; and this will often be the caseeven when the boulder rests upon the native bed-rock. These stones upon the earths surface are, therefore,guests from afar, foreign immigrants; they are erraticblocks —the name was a:iven them lonsf before their orieinwas understood—which have in many cases come from agreat distance.
