VÃ¥r tryck-konst kom med Gutenberg för 400 Ã¥r sedan; kineserna hadesin redan 400 Ã¥r dessförinnan, dÃ¥ de tryckte en sÃ¥ kalladimperialupplaga af sina heliga skrifter. Att de äro skickligai mÃ¥ngahanda konster och yrken, derom vittna bäst deras tillalla delar af verlden utsända handelsartiklar. Det yrke, somstÃ¥r högst, lär emellertid vara Ã¥kerbruket, som vÃ¥rdas medyttersta omsorg. Kinas armé torde bestÃ¥ af omkring en million man ifredstid, flottan af 3000 skepp, hvaraf en tredjedel är flodfar-tyg. Konfusii eller konfutse religion är den allmännastrÃ¥dande, buddaismen dernäst, hvarjemte finnes en tredje välspridd sekt. SÃ¥ lÃ¥ngt om Kina och dess forntid i allmänhet. NunÃ¥gra sidor om dess historia sedan vi började skrifva 1800.

Mycket är det icke, men det lilla vi kunna inrymma tjenardock till att visa, att äfven Kina, väldigt som det är i omfÃ¥ng,folkmängd och resurser, förr eller senare skall öpiDnas förden moderna civilisationens inflytande. Den första storm som i vÃ¥rt Ã¥rhundrade upprörde denkinesiska civilisationens annars lugna yta kom 1850. En manaf ansprÃ¥kslös härkomst -ââ hans namn var Hung-sew-Tseunâ vardt omvänd till kristendomen och bildade en kristensekt, hvilken pÃ¥ hösten samma Ã¥r kom i fejd med myndig-heterna och antog xoolitisk karakter. Hung, som vi för kort-hetens skull kalla honom, pÃ¥stod sig ha blifvit af GudÃ¥lagd att utrota afguderiet, fördrifva tartarerna och upprättaen ny ordning eller dynasti, nämligen Taeping, den eviga fre-den. Han antog derför titeln Tae-ping-wang eller Tien-wang,den himmelskt sände, medan fem af hans förnämsta ledarenämdes vesterns prins, österns X3rins, nordens prins, södernsprins samt
