Description
English: From the September 3, 1938 issue of the News and Observer:

"Foreman of the composing room of The News and Observer for 18 years, stocky, red headed Ellis Speer, a native of Winston-Salem, was apprenticed 37 years ago at the age of 12 and has carried his union card since he was 17 years old. Designer of the new composing room, best lighted and one of the best arranged in the United States, Speer was foreman of the Winston-Salem Journal's composing room before he was 21 years old. He also served eight years as foreman of The Greensboro News before coming to Raleigh."
