Text Appearing After Image:
Fig. 6 Fig. 6 is illustrated a tree that has developed an upright habitof growth due to the lack of pruning after the second year.Proper pruning would have remedied this difficulty. § 11 PEACH CULTURE 23 The peach produces its fiuit principally on the wood or twiggrowi:h of the previous season, although some fruit is producedon spurs and short twigs that develop on portions of branchesthat are 2 and in some cases even 3 years old. It is evident, therefore, that the annual cutting back of bearing peach treesreduces the bearing surface and may considerably reduce thecrop, but the commercial varieties of peaches set such an abun-dance of fmit buds that some annual cutting back is necessaryto retain the vigor of the tree. Unpruned trees frequentlyproduce a somewhat larger crop the first season than treesthat have been regularly pruned, but after the first or secondcrop the pruned trees generally produce the larger crop, as theyare likely to be more vigorous and to have a greater annualgro
