Transcript InfoField | back of card, This card given you by Boodle Lane, one mile west of Galena, Kansas, on Highway 66. Galena was incorporated June 19,1877, and during the ensuing years, was known as one of the wildest, wickedst boom camps of the entire country. Thousands of mines were operated at one time. Ore was first discovered in the Short Creek Bottoms, between Galena and Empire City. A log stockade was erected between the two towns as rivalry for supremacy had sprung up and as late as 1900 in an otherwise dry state, Galena had open saloons and one of the most notorious districts of gambling halls and brothels to be found anywhere. One mine, known as the Staffleback Shaft is situated within twenty feet of Highway 66. In it were found the bodies of several persons, allegedly murdered by the Stafflebacks. Galena is today a city of good schools and people of good morals, and most of the past is forgotten. We invite you to call and see us again on your next trip. Thank you. |
