on the 69th and71st Pennsylvania Regiments, which had been awaiting the oncom-ing attack. At this moment they were brought under the fire ofa Union brigade, which was occupying a small wood in advanceand to the left of the point of Picketts attack. Hancock, realizingthe purpose of the attack, and always on the alert to seize a favor-able opportunity, threw a force on Picketts flank. Two of Armisteads regiments were frightfully^ decimated andthrown into a disorganized state by this movement. The remainderof his brigade dropped in the rear of the centre of Picketts line.Armistead, swinging his sword wildly, and rushing from point topoint, urged his men forward, and reached the front rank betweenKemper and Garnett. In the impetuous rush which ensued thesebrigades became a compact struggling mass of human beings allbent on bloody work. Pushing forward, as if moved by someirresistible force superior to the individual will, they threw themselvesupon the Union line like so many thunderbolts.

It appeared impossible for human powerto withstand it, and for a moment it seemed that it must sweepeverything before it. With what breathless interest we watchedthe scene. General Lee, from a convenient point, stood calmlylooking at the struggle. Not an expression of his face or an actionindicated that he had other than hopes of success. He was as imper-turbable as a rock. What emotions swayed his soul at that suprememoment he and God only know. The first line of the Federals was pierced and they were drivenback upon the earthworks near the artillery. There the work ofdeath was renewed with frightful slaughter. Charges of grapeshotwere fired into Picketts men with terrible effect. Hancock andGibbon rushed up their reserves to help stay the furious onslaughtof the Virginians. Hall rectified his line, which had been out-flanked
