He became associated with hisfather in the general merchandise and realestate business. He dealt extensively in stock,buying and selling cattle for many years. Hewas also a wholesale cheese dealer, buying oldEnglish cheese and selling it in New York,Boston, Baltimore and Washington.. He hadalso a considerable business in lumber. CONNECTICUT 1437 politics he was a Democrat up to the Lincolnadministration, afterward a Republican, andfor many years he held the otftce of justice ofthe peace. He was an able and fearless magis-trate. He served the town also as selectman,and in 1849 was representative to the generalassembly of the state. When the centennialof the town was celebrated he was chairmanof the committee in charge and was an im-portant factor in making the occasion notable.In religion he was a Congregationalist. Hemarried, July 7, 1841, Maria R. Munsill, bornat Torrington, April 26, 1819, died February26, 1898, daughter of Levi and Rachel Alun-sill. Children: i.
