English: This 1825 map of the Grand Duchy of Finland is from a larger work,Geograficheskii atlas Rossiiskoi imperii, tsarstva Pol'skogo i velikogo kniazhestva Finliandskogo (Geographical atlas of the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Poland, and the Grand Duchy of Finland), containing 60 maps of the Russian Empire. Compiled and engraved by Colonel V.P. Piadyshev, it reflects the detailed mapping carried out by Russian military cartographers in the first quarter of the 19th century. The map shows population centers (three gradations by size), fortresses, churches, redoubts, postal courtyards and stations, roads (four types), and provincial and district borders. Distances are shown in versts, a Russian measure, now no longer used, equal to 1.07 kilometers. Legends, the index of provincial and county names, and place-names are in Russian and Swedish. The territory depicted on the map roughly corresponds to that of present-day Finland, except for portions of Karelia lost to the Soviet Union during World War II. Sweden began to subjugate the Finns in the 12th century, in an invasion connected to the era of the Northern Crusades throughout the Baltic region. The pagan Finns had previously migrated westward to the Baltic from northwestern Siberia. They are related to the Estonian and Hungarian peoples, but culturally and linguistically distinct from the Nordic Scandinavians. Sweden retained Finland from the 12th century until 1809 when, following upheavals in the Napoleonic era, Finland became a grand duchy within the Russian Empire. In 1812 Tsar Alexander I moved the Finnish capital from Turku to Helsinki, a location closer to Saint Petersburg. World Digital Library. |
