The Marquis of Tullibardine (later 8th Duke of Atholl), Lieutenant John George Stewart-Murray, Royal Horse Guards, outside a tent in camp.

Lord Tullibardine (1871 - 1942) was born at Blair Castle, Perthshire, the son of John Stewart-Murray, 7th Duke of Atholl, and was educated at Eton College. After joining the Royal Horse Guards, he rose to the rank of Second Lieutenant in 1892 and to Lieutenant a year later. He fought in the Battle of Khartoum and the Battle of Atbara. On 15 November 1898, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his service in Sudan and was subsequently promoted to Captain. From 1899 to 1902, he fought in the Second Boer War in South Africa, rising to Brevet Major in 1900. On his return to Scotland in 1902, the Marquis founded the Transvaal Scottish Volunteers in his capacity as Officer Commanding the Scottish Horse (Yeomanry). He became 8th Earl of Atholl on the death of his brother in 1917 and was subsequently responsible for the establishment of the War Memorial Chapel at Edinburgh Castle which commemorates the Scottish dead of the First World War.
