at the time he made his orig-inal design for the picture; the theme had long lain in his mind, and its treatment was wellmatured, before he was called on to carry it out on a large scale. GrEOEGE FtXLLER, born at Deerfield, Mass., in 1822, was originally drawn, like Hunt, tosculiDture, and he studied drawing from the cast with the late Henry Kirke Brown in Albany,Avhere he also modelled a few heads. Brown was himself an excellent painter, and his adviceand assistance were no doubt of great service to his pupil. After painting portraits here andthere in country towns, says Mrs. Clement, he settled in Boston and studied the pictures ofStuart, Copley, and AUston. He was no doubt much influenced by the works of AUston, buthis own nature was too marked and individual to be controlled by the practice of any otherartist. He lived and worked in J!^ew York for twelve years, and in 1859 passed a few monthsin Europe. On his return, he retired to his home in the country, and produced nothing for

CLARKE, ESa ART AND ARTISTS OF OUR TIME. 253 the public until 1876; when he exhibited some of his landscapes and ideal heads in Boston.He long had a studio in Boston, and occasionally exhibited, but he produced few pictures andworked slowly, and as, owing to the demand for his pictures, he was not allowed to keepanything long that he painted, his opportunities for appealing to the public were few.Among his best-known pictures are the Turkey Pasture in Kentucky, And She was aAVitch, Winifred Dysart, and the Romany Girl, which last were produce from the originalpicture belonging to Mr. Thomas B. Clarke. Fullers Arethusa is in the Boston Museum ofFine Arts, for which it was purchased by the students in the Maseum Drawing-Classes. Mr.Fuller died in 1884. Abbot H.
