The sword-dance, or, more properly, a combat with swordsand bucklers, regulated by music, was exhibited by the Saxon glee-men. We have spoken on this subject in a former chapter, and re-sume it here, because the jugglers of the middle ages were famous fortheir skill in handling the sword. The combat represented on thetwenty-sixth plate, taken from a manuscript of the thirteenth century,1varies, in several respects, from that on the eighteenth plate; thoughboth, I presume, are different modifications of the same performance,as well as that on the top of the twenty-sixth plate, which is carriedinto execution without the assistance of a minstrel.
