GAME OF FORTIFICATION. CONTRIBUTED BY A SUBSCRIBER. Mr. Godey : With your kind permission, I will intro-duce to the numberless readers of the Ladys Book agame of Fortification, which may serve to beguile thetedium of a winter evening, when the mind is perplexedwith care, or the body wearied with the labors of theday. Being by education averse to games of chance, such as cards or dice, I have thought of this mode ofamusement as not liable to this objection, and think thisis one wherein much forecast is necessarily exerted towin the game whichever side may be chosen, in order toobserve the effect of your own moves, as well as thepresent or prospective ones of your antagonist. And thegainer and loser may often be reminded of passages intheir lives, wheii they have made a false move for wantof due consideration.

The diagram before us shows a board to representthe Game of Fortification. At each intersection of thelines are small holes bored, in which are to be placedforty-three small black tacks, such as are used by up-holsterers; or if these are not to be had conveniently,their places may be supplied by grains of corn or coffee,placed in line on one side of the board, so as to fill upfive of the rows ; on the two middle points of the sixthrow are placed two buttons, these are the opposingforces. The first move is by the pawns or soldiers, allof which ai-e to be moved along the lines, always takingcare to keep each one fortified by another on every side.The object of the soldiers is to crowd the two pieces intoa corner, where they are checkmated or cannot stir,when the game is won by the soldiers. On the otherhand, by judicious moves, either of the two round piecesfinding any soldier unsupported by another on aay of the lines, overleaps him and removes him from theboard, and can sometimes by o
