Now shewas home again, alone, with nothing to doexcept to read . . . and destroy . . . Jimsletters. Ah, here was the first letter hedever written her . . . after that wonderfulday in the country! And here was another. . . after the dance. And other letters fromfar away Rio ... warm and tender, full of hisplans and hopes for the future . . . full ofhints that maybe someday . . . ? One byone, she went through them, trying vainlyto find some reason that would explain hislater change in attitude. The day he stepped off the plane fromRio, he had been so ardent, so glad to seeher.
