THEANTIGONE OF SOPHOCLES TRANSLATED BY RICHARD CLAVERHOUSE JEBB i Sophocles was born in 496 b. c. and lived to the age of ninety-one.His father, Sophillus, was a wealthy citizen of Colonos, a fashionablesuburb of Athens, and the young dramatist received the best educationthat Greece could afford. In music, which he studied under Lamprocles,he was particularly apt, and at the age of sixteen he was chosen to leada chorus of youths in the celebration of the victory of Salamis (480 b. a).He was frequently employed as ambassador, and in other high offices inthe republic, and in the Samian War was given the generalship in jointcommand with Pericles. This appointment is said to have been influ-enced by the great popular success of Antigone. At twenty-eight hecompeted with jEschylus, and was awarded the prize by Cimon and hisfellow-generals, who had just returned from Scyros and were the judgesfor that year (468 b. a).
