THE PROMETHEUS BOUNDOF iESCHYLUS TRANSLATED BY ELIZABETH BARRETT BROWNING .^Eschylus, the first in time and strength of the three great Greektragedians, was born in Eleusis, Attica, in 525 B. c. His father, Eupho-rion, is supposed to have been a priest in the old temple of Demeter,which was destroyed by the Persians, 484 b. c; and the son was undoubt-edly an initiate into the famous mysteries of his native town, and wasaccused before the council of the Areopagus (468 b. c), according to someauthorities, for having revealed them in one of his plays. The latterpart of his life was lived in the stirring days of the Persian wars, andwhen thirty-five years old he fought with distinction and was woundedat the battle of Marathon. He was also at Salamis and Platea, andappears himself to have been prouder of his record as a soldier than ofhis reputation as a writer.
