Description
English: HMS Sheffield Fights Her Way Through Heavy Seas. From on Board HMS Sheffield at Sea, the British Cruiser HMS Sheffield Had a Battle With the Elements during a Passage Through Northern Waters. She Ran Into Storms of Great Severity Which Lasted For Three Days. at Times the Wind Reached Hurricane Force of More Than 65 Knots (about 75 Mph). Driving Spray Formed a Curtain Which Reduced Visibility To Less Than a Cable (200 Yards). So Great Was the Wind Pressure on Her Hull and Upper Works That She Was Hove To With Engines Running at the Minimum Speed To Give Steerage Way. Heavy Seas Stove in the Starboard Whaler and Hurled the Accommodation Ladder From Its Sea Stowage To the Quarterdeck. Depth Charge Smoke Floats and Carley RAFTS Went Overboard. After Three Days the Storm Abated With Surprising Suddenness and HMS Sheffield Was Able To Set a Course For Port.
