ntly-formed scales orcellulcs from the humanconjunctiva: A. section of the epithelium of the conjunctiva, svith somescales loosened. After Henle. CYLINDEICAL AND CILIARY EPITHELIUM. 329 which extends from the cardiac orifice of the stomach alongthe whole of the digestive canal to the anus, and lines thevarious principal gland-ducts which open upon the mucoussurface of this tract. It is also found in the greater part ofthe male genito-urinary apparatus, and the gland-ducts con-nected with it; and lines the urinary passages of the femalefrom the orifice of the urethra to the beginning of the urinarytubules of the kidneys. It is composed of closely-set cells ofa conical, pyramidal, or cyhndrical form, whose apices areattached to the mucous membrane, or to flat epithelial cellslying upon it, and whose bases, which are usually terminatedby a truncated plane, are free. Each such cell encloses, atnearly mid-distance between its base and apex, a flat nucleus with nucleoli (fig. 35). Fig. 35.*
