Hand operated mill, Europe, 1701-1900 |
||
Description |
Plants and herbs need to be prepared before they can be used in medical treatments. Cutting was one way for a pharmacist to begin preparing such material. Other methods include grinding, crushing and boiling. Placed in the top, the contents were ground by turning the handle by hand – much like a pepper mill. The powder in the drawer underneath would be added to syrups made from sugar or to mixtures to make pills and tablets. maker: Unknown maker Place made: Europe Wellcome Images |
