Title
Handaxe: A Palaeolithic bifacial handaxe.
Description
English: A heavily rolled ovate bifacial handaxe dating from the Palaeolithic period. The axe is sub-cordate in plan with a relatively wide flat butt. The distal end has been broken in antiquity, as it has the same patination as the rest of the surface, but has been reshaped. The profile of the axehead narrows towards the distal end and again towards the butt. It has been worked on both the dorsal and ventral faces. The dorsal face has been struck in various directions resulting in both large and small forming scars. The ventral face does not have the same large number of forming scars and instead has more large scars resulting from being struck near the edges. The butt is wide and flat with some retouch along the dorsal edge. Both the right and left edges have been retouched and have a slight S-shaped profile. The handaxe has a mid to dark brown patina over the entire surface.

This is a cordate (heart-shaped) bi-facial handaxe, attributed to the Acheulian type, or Mode 2. cf. Butler. C. 2005. Prehistoric Flintwork. pp. 62-64. This handaxe therefore dates to 500,000 to 15,000 BC.
