Distribution. — Breeds in Pacific coast region from British Columbia toCalifornia; south in winter to extreme northwestern Mexico. Nest. — A large globular structure fastened to tule stalks, and wovenof wet tule stems, with wet grass and algse matted in, and with a lining ofdry algse and tule pith. Eggs (1 set) : 5, lavender brown, clouded or mot-tled. Food. — Insects. The wrens of the marshes are as full of song as the house wrens,and as they live in colonies where they all sing at once theirswamps are as noisy as a pond full of frogs, but their voices are

Like the house wrens they sing all over, and sometimes as theycling to a tule stem bend almost double, comically swaying from sideto side. Their big globular nests make conspicuous objects hung on thetule stems, and a walk among them with the birds singing at you aswell as around you is an experience quite to a bird-lovers heart. While the tule swamps are their breeding grounds, in fall and win-ter they are found in weed patches and rank grass. 725c. C. p. plesius Oherh. Interior Tule Wren. Like palustris, but upper parts paler, under parts grayer, middle tailfeathers heavily barred, and upper and lower tail coverts barred ; paler andmore sharply barred thanpaludicola.
