k from the craftsmans workshops. Very unusual is the beautiful applique ofdragon-flies. The groundwork is black net, while the applique is fine green felt, importedfrom Norway. It is beautifully worked insatin stitch, and all the stem lines and thewings of the dragon-flies are embroidered insilk. The flowers are done in beautiful tonesof yellow outlined with the finest embroidery. Our illustration shows only the ornamentationat the top of the curtain. There is as muchwork at the base as there is at the top of thecurtain, the colouring, of course, being thesame. Three or four pair of these exquisitecurtains were made for one room, the colourscheme of which was emphasized in thesecurtains. There is hardly any needlecraft to-daywhich gives such infinite scope as appliquedportieres. Fortunately we are at last realizingwhat is good in art, and modern craft-workersvie with each other in trying to produceoriginal and beautiful results. Greater stridesseem to have been made in portieres than in

Aim at the effect, and endeavour toget beautiful results without too much elabora-tion. The work is apt to lose in decorativevalue by being too closely covered withstitches. A rich effect can be obtained bythe use of handsome material and very littleneedlework, depending mostly for the resultsupon the beauty of the design. The illustrations of portieres shows somebeautiful hangings worked by the pupils ofthe Pratt Institute at Brooklyn. They arepartly of applique, while the background ismade interesting by swirls worked in em-broidery. The portiere with the dragons is made ofsilk crinkled tapestry, a charming importedmaterial, obtained at any upholsterers in acomplete line of colouring. Some of thesetapestries have a plain surface, while othersare made in a two-toned weave, giving achangeable effect that is quite interesting.T
