Sepulchre of Theodoric the Great (Sixth Century) convalescent, as the afternoon brightenstowards sunset. Seen from the walls, thecolors of the sky seem to soak down uponthe city; it flushes, seems to respond tothe light. Standing in the Piazza Byronat sunset, one sees the red walls of thechurch of S. Francesco as if flamingagainst a sky from which the fires ofsunset are reflected; every leaf of thelittle tree that stands in the corner of thesquare burns with a separate flame, andthe red glow extends to the tomb ofBraccioforte, where Dante lies buriedamong the sarcophagi. Ravenna is full of ancient monu-ments, which seem to last on, after sounthinkably many centuries, like veryold people, blind and deaf, and feeble inhands and feet, who still sit by the hearth of their oldhomes, dressed inancient finery, andtolerating the youthof the world withan impeccable cour-tesy. They fright-en the younger peo-ple a little, who feeltheir own flimsymodernness, and ayouth which is notlikely to grow
