He simply ex-perienced a difficulty in having anyspiritual life apart from women. Hecould do with a minimum of inspira-tion, but such as he needed had to comefrom them. All his thoughts clusteredabout them. Just as he experienced afeeling of exaltation when he foundhimself in their company, so he couldnever see another man similarly en-gaged without regarding him as a beingof singular fortune. Always, moreover,he conceived the woman he did notknow as a creature of extraordinarygifts. Evanthia Solaris seemed to haveeluded classification because, withoutpossessing any gifts at all beyond acertain magnetism bewilderingly com-posed of feminine timidity and tigerishcourage, she had inspired in him astrange belief that she would bring himgood fortune.
