no rain with Wednesdaymorning, however, and the wind hadsomewhat abated. It was now from thenorth, and would permit our departure; sowe made what haste we could and gotaboard. As far as we could see, the broadlake was covered with white-caps, but thelittle boat headed gallantly into them;the waves looked enormous, and were lessthe w^ork of the present wind, though thatwas a stiff one, than of last nights gale.The boat rose and fell with a slap into thetrough of each succeeding wave; the la-dies, enjoying the excitement, sat coveredwith rubber cloths that streamed with thewater dashing in, laughing as wave orspray washed their faces; and Mr. Weggappeared somewhat grieved at their goodcheer. Would the ladies like to put back ?he asked. Put back?—what for? they indig-nantly demanded. Oh, I can stand it if you can. Thump-ing across the waves this way might starta plank. Yes, sir, it is a stout boat, as Itold you. Only—well, ladies usally areliable to get scared at such times as this.

WEGGS PARTY ON THE KISSIMMEE. 427 We had crossed the roughest water,though still in a strong wind, and weremaking a tack by the Rookery, wlien, witha sudden crash, the sail fell rushing down. The oars! the oars! Dont let thewind get us out to sea! Mr. Wegg yelled,springing forward; but Leggins and Ma-ginnis had the oars in an instant, andheaded the boat into the grasses. It wasonly the sailing tackle broken by thestrain; a new rope, and we would beready for the lake again; and fortunatelywe descried a landing just ahead. Wepushed in, and as we did so a large blueheron rose and flew from her nest in alow spreading tree. No other birds wereseen, for this further shore of the Rookerywas almost bare of trees; but Maginnisadded the rare eggs of the blue heron tohis collection, previously enriched by aneagles egg, cream-colored and with flecksof chocolate brown: the herons eggs wereas large as a goose egg, three in number,and of robins-egg blue.
