Still anothergroup gave us an invitation, and atlast we accepted it. Here was ourfirst evidence of the Cape Breton hos-pitality we had missed the previousevening; here people came seekingon the highway who might devour.The men sat down first, and the wo-men served us with bannocks andsour milk, potatoes and boiled saltmackerel, bread and butter. It wasone of the best meals of our trip; fornine times out of ten we were givenonly the staple articles of diet—bread,butter, and bitter tea. The peoplespoke Gaelic to one another, and wegot no hint of their talk; but the quietand kindly spirit of the family sufficed toput us at ease. I noted his habits, because the pigis sometimes a member of the householdhere in regard to bed and board. A minis-ter at a wedding remained all niglit, andwas given a low cot bed in the living-room.
